![]() Quake ushered in the new era of shooter that is still essentially what we have now, whereas Doom in retrospect shares more in common with top-down 2D shooters. Of course we wouldn't have Quake without Doom, but technlogically Doom's engine was a dead-end. Ironically, I believe Daikatana was essentially supposed to be what Quake was intended to be, with a different theme though. Nah, Romero was pretty involved in Quake, it's just that its development was very troubled, so Romero's initial (much more ambitious) plan was scrapped and the more simplistic 'Doom-in-3D' formula was used instead.
